He’s got the whole world – on a disc
News broke recently that Researchers at Swinburne University of Technology in Australia have created a technology that could lead to DVD/CD sized discs that could contain 1.6 TERABYTES of information. Please note the capitals – yes, I'm aware I was shouting.
I won't try to explain the technology, because, frankly, CD technology still amazes me and it's getting on for 30 years old – this latest stuff should only be accurately explained by someone with a beard and much too much up top.
But I can tell you that it includes nanometre-scale particles of gold (it would, wouldn't it) and information recorded in a range of different colour wavelengths – astonishingly the information is read not by laser, but tiny, tiny pixies (probably).
More onto less
The thing is, on the surface this sort of amount of data on one disc is obviously astounding, remarkable, breathtaking and a bit baffling. But aren't we getting a bit too good at this cramming of data onto smaller and smaller things?
There’s a song "He's Got The Whole World In His Hands", I believe. Well, he might do fairly soon the way things are going.
Let's have a bit of a recap of this "carrying data around/losing it" malarkey – in general terms, the first portable way of carrying data was the good old floppy disc which allowed a whopping 1.44MB of data on a disc (that isn’t even enough space for one MP3 file).
If you wanted to bootleg any software back then (naughty), you had to copy a lot of discs – your correspondent here remembers loading Windows 3.1 from, I think, something like 26 discs.
Generally, you had to really want to nick the software for such money and time-consuming illegal activities.
Quantum leap
Then along came the Iomega Zip drive which gave us 100MB – a considerable jump at the time. Recordable CD gave us 700MB and brought the real possibility of perfect copying of audio and recordable DVD up it to 4.7GB to do the same for video.
Blu-ray pushed it to 50GB – whoa, stop! we thought. But no – you could fit around 300 standard DVDs onto one of these 1.6 TERABYTE (sorry, I still have to shout it) discs.
The thing is that data is becoming more vulnerable simply because so much can be crammed on one easy-to-snaffle/lose (delete as necessary) disc.
Discy business
Remember a couple of years back when someone lost two CDs with 25 million child benefit records on them in the post?
Apart from the worry to a large chunk of the population that their names/addresses, banking details and National insurance details could end up in the wrong hands, most of the public couldn't quite believe that you could get 25 MILLION records on two shiny 5in discs.
Twenty years before that amount of data would have resided in a few warehouses crammed to the ceiling with paper files with someone called Clare ready to scoot along with a ladder to get the file you required (within a week).
One disc to watch them all
And think about the record and film industries. Forget about one of these new discs allowing you to copy an album or movie – you could pretty much rip every blinking CD and DVD you've ever owned on to one of the things.
And instead of cherry-picking data to back up, you might as well back up everything – thus the chances of data being multiplied and sneaking out/being nicked increases.
So, the next time you hear a record company up in arms about the latest album by their artist being bootlegged or film company furious that their latest release is available on the street, raise your hand and break the news….. gently.
Better safe...
You reckon that the discernable purchaser of knocked-off music would only want the latest album? Why not the whole back catalogue? And why would a professional cyber-criminal look for a few records?
Surely best to get everything that has ever been written down – just in case, like.
