Lifestyle system does hi-fi shocker
Known for its uncompromising approach to hi-fi, Marantz probably doesn't seem a likely name to find on a tiny all-in-one music system with an emphasis on design.
But Marantz claims that despite its pretty-boy looks and compact dimensions, its M-CR502 system is 'no half-measure'.
Hints that this claim might be true begin with the CR502's build quality, which enjoys a chic aluminium cabinet finished with a shiny black fascia.
Carry on amping
It's also powerful for such a small unit, thanks to two 25W stereo amplifiers – adding up to 100W of raw music power.
Audiophiles will like the fact, too, that you can bi-amp the 4x25W output, while multi-room users should know that all this digital power can also be diverted to a pair of stereo speakers in an extra room.
Add to the equation a USB input for playing back a USB-enabled music device; an AUX input; compatibility with Marantz's IS201 and IS301 iPod docks; a DAB/FM/AM tuner; and a subwoofer line out, and it's pretty clear that the SR502's diddy nature has resulted in far less compromises than you get with your average micro system.
The SR509 will come out in March with an estimated price tag of 10p under £500.
