Social networking killing off email

Social networking overtaking email is the world's preferred way of communicating

A new report by analyst Nielsen Online suggests that social networking sites are overtaking traditional email is the preferred method of communication online.

According to the report, such sites are visited by two thirds of the world's population, and social networking traffic now accounts for 10 per cent of all internet traffic.

In publishing the figures, Nielsen Online chief executive John Burbank commented that "social networking has become a fundamental part of the global online experience".

Facebook dominating

The statistics certainly agree, with Facebook – the most popular social networking site – being visited by three out of ten internet users worldwide at least once a month, and one in every 11 minutes of internet use globally dedicated to produce content on blogs and social networks.

The report also showed a dramatic rise in the use of mobile technology for networking, and it's the UK leading the way. The number of UK mobile social networkers increased by 249% over the past year
