Eco functions and improved processing the order of the day
The 31st floor of the Centre Point tower in London was the venue yesterday as Sony proudly showed off the latest fruit of its televisual loins.
One or two of the sets on show – such as the Z4500s with its 200Hz processing and X4500s with their LED backlighting – we'd actually seen before. But that still left plenty of new stuff to get our teeth into.
Essentially what we've got are new, improved versions of Sony's S, V and W ranges, with a 'WE5' series added as a premium model designed to cater for people interested in green issues – or saving money on leccy bills.
S marks the entry-level spot
The entry-level S5500 models come in 22, 32, 37 and 40-inch screen sizes, with the 37 and 40in models offering full HD resolutions. Even these entry-level models feature USB ports and three HDMIs, too.
The step-up V5500 models, meanwhile, introduce Sony's new Bravia Engine 3 video processing – a system apparently so improved over the previous Bravia Engine system that it comes on a completely redesigned chipset.
The 32, 37, 40, 46 and 52in V5500s are also significant for sporting both DLNA Ethernet ports for receiving files from your PC and Sony's Applicast system, which provides limited 'internet' functions via Sony's own dedicated online content servers.
The higher-level W5500 series, meanwhile, will be available in 32in, 37in, 40in, 46in and 52in sizes, and is effectively the V5500 with added MotionFlow 100Hz processing.
TVs that love the planet as much as you do
Finally we get to the WE5 series. Z4500sWe've covered these elsewhere already, but this is the first time we've been able to see them in the flesh. And very nice they look too.
Available in 40 and 46in screen sizes, the WE5 TVs use a new HCFL backlight system that allegedly reduces the screen's general power consumption by as much as 50%.
Plus they've got an innovative Presence Sensor: a heat sensing device with a 4m or so operating range that switches off the picture when it senses that you've left the room to, say, make a cup of tea. And then switches the picture back on again when it senses you re-entering the room.
