Freeloaders still welcome
Twitter is in the process of developing paid for pro accounts as a way to make money from its millions of succinct users.
It's still in the process of toying with which features it will offer, but it's looking at things like official account verification, traffic analytics and ways to introduce regular users to businesses.
All about the Benjamins
Twitter co-founder Biz Stone told the Wall Street Journal that it recently hired someone to oversee the development of paid accounts and that it planned to launch them later this year.
All existing features that Twitter currently offers would remain free, however. It would just be new commercial elements that would require a fee.
Stone confirmed to Silicon Valley Insider that it was looking at ways to help businesses use the service.
"Our question is, how can we help? What can Twitter offer for a fee that will improve the experience? Will it be account verification? Will it be lightweight analytics? Will there be opportunities for introducing customers to businesses on Twitter," Stone said.
Twitter has also launched a new site in partnership with Federated Media and Microsoft that focuses on company executives on Twitter called Exectweets to investigate other ways of bringing in revenue.
Availability
Pro account are expected later in the year, so we'll just have to wait and see what goodies Twitter has in store. Exectweets is available now.
