Project Kangaroo could bounce back under Orange

Mobile firm in talks to buy video-on-demand assets

Orange is in talks to snap up the remains of Project Kangaroo, the video-on-demand joint venture from the BBC, ITV and Channel 4 which was blocked by the Competition Commission back in February.

Orange is investigating whether it could use the technology as part of its Orange TV broadband service across Europe.

The future's bright, abroad

So far, Project Kangaroo has cost its backers around £20m but it's expected its assets would sell for significantly less than that. Another undisclosed company is also in the running as a serious buyer.

France Telecom, which owns Orange, is looking to use Project Kangaroo's technology as part of its Orange TV service in France, which currently has over one million subscribers.

"On Orange TV we are very cautious about what we are saying in the UK but it could help us in developing more quickly Orange TV projects in France," a France Telecom spokesman told The Guardian.

Orange has also been looking into launching Orange TV in the UK, but its plans are currently on hold due to the economic climate and the uncertainty over regulation.
