HP launches dv2 pimped up netbook

Bigger is better

For those without 20/20 vision or cursed with sausage fingers, the current range of super small netbooks are a bit of a no go area, but thanks to HP now everyone can play the small laptop game.

The Pavilion dv2 sports a 12.1in display giving it an extra 2in over the netbook competition out there. It should also have enough computer oomph to handle Windows Vista, while most mini PCs are only up to XP or Linux.

Specs appeal

Most netbooks run Intel's Atom chip, but HP is using AMD's Athlon Neo MV-40 processor for the dv2, running at 1.6GHz. The entry level model comes packing 1GB of memory and 160GB hard drive, with up to 4GB of RAM and 500GB of storage space available if you pay more.

It comes with the standard collection of holes to plug things in - 3 USB, VGA, Ethernet, headphones and mic - but you'll also find an HDMI port on all but the cheapest model and 802.11b/g wireless networking is included across the range.

Graphics on the low end model come from an ATI Radeon X1250 chip, while the more expensive offerings pack an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3410 processor.

It comes with an external DVD writer as standard, but the better specified models can also support Blu-ray as an option.

It's all wrapped up in a case measuring 240 x 292 x 32mm and weighs in at 1.7kg.

Availability

The Pavilion dv2 is shipping now, prices start at £499 if you just want the basic model, with more beefier specs available for £599 and £699.
