eBay spinning off Skype as public company

No synergies between shopping and chatting

eBay has decided after all that calls over the internet don't have much to do with the online auction marketplace and it's spinning off Skype as a separate public company.

The company has spent the past year looking at how Skype fits into its current business and come to the conclusion that it doesn't.

It's good to talk

That's not to say things are all doom and gloom at Skype - the company brought in revenues of $551m in 2008, up 44 percent on the year before. It's anticipated to break the $1bn revenue barrier in 2011, according to its own forecasts.

The recently launched iPhone Skype application has proved hugely popular with over 1 million downloads with 36 hours of its release.

Back in 2005 eBay splashed out $2.6bn for Skype, plus it's paid an extra $530m since then to shareholders as part of the deal.

The internet rumour mill was suggesting that Skype's original founders were in the frame to buy it back until eBay announced it would be putting it on the public market. The initial public offering is expected to occur in the first half of 2010 with the specific timing dependent on market conditions.
