Palm wonderphone to debut in time for Christmas, but can it handle the iPhone?
Palm has announced the UK release date of its hotly-anticipated smartphone, the Pre. It will be available on O2 "in time for the winter holidays", says Palm.
The UK, Ireland, Germany and Spain will be the European launch countries for the smartphone, which launched in the USA this time last month.

The US launch was a success: Charter Equity Research analyst Edward Snyder claimed the Pre sold 300,000 units in its first month, according to Wired.
Palm's WebOS operating system currently looks like the only serious touchscreen challenger to the Apple iPhone's spectacular user interface. Its much-vaunted multi-tasking abilities – the capability to run more than one application at a time – are a particular blindspot for the iPhone.
The Pre launches with an app store similar to Apple's App Store for the iPhone and iPod touch. Palm's is far more modest, with around 30 apps to Apple's 50,000. Nonetheless, it was claimed keen Pre users downloaded 700,000 applications in the store's first month.
Early adopters can register their interest in the Pre at www.palm.com/uk-pre-notify.

Palm will lose out here, with the extortionate contracts now available once the PRE is out I would be pre-pared to wait again for either a better one or a real iPhone 3 probably released next summer.
I wanted the PRE about 2 months ago when my contract expired now I have to wait possibly another 5 months for one that will be out dated before it hits the shelfs added to a 2 year contract on this "Old" tech will be like a touchstone around the neck. Whilst better and faster phone come out.
I think I'll pass and go for Android they release platforms faster than Pre can make a press release.

Come on Palm pull you finger out, if you want the Pre to really take some market share you have to get the device out on some shelves and quick. Apple have made moves to improve the iPhone with the release of the 3GS, in part I am sure as a response to the feature set being offered by the Pre.
The Android OS is hitting more and more platforms, and with new chipsets from Qualcomm and nVidia there are going to be slew of new 'smart' devices hitting the market.
Palm has to be the only that company that give everybody a huge amount of details about its product and then says 'It won't be out six months so you'll be able to emulate use before we can actually sell the product ourselves'.
Talk about frustrating. Palm users wanted the Pre the day after it was revealed at CES not six months to a year down the line, how do they expect to stay in business?
