Sonos launches new CR200 touchscreen controller

Replaces existing model, adds iPhone-esque look and feel without affecting price

Sonos has released the CR200, a new controller for its iconic Multi-Room Music System.

Replacing the discontinued CR100, the 200 adds touch sensitivity to its 3.5in screen touchscreen and switches to a portrait form factor.

In redesigning the controller, Sonos seems to have taken extensive cues from the Apple iPhone in the CR200's interface, virtual QWERTY keyboard and layout and use of icons.

And the switch to vertical orientation continues the apparent morphing into a dead ringer for a mobile phone.

Reduced size

The addition of touch to the screen means Sonos has been able to cut down the controller's size, with the CR100's scroll button and assorted buttons around the device's face making way for a single strip of buttons below the screen on the CR200 – a Home button, and volume up, down and mute controls.

Completing the hardware changes are a rubberised back, a slimmer dock to reflect the portrait orientation and a light sensor that sets the illumination of the buttons to suit ambient lighting conditions.

On the software side, search has been made easier with autofill suggestions as you type, while artist information has broadened to include details like upcoming tour dates.

Unchanged price

The CR200 replaces the CR100 in Sonos' various bundles without affecting their price, while to buy it on its own comlete with cradle will still cost £279 – also unchanged over the CR100.

But it's not all good news. There's no upgrade discount to reward existing customers for their brand loyalty, and the CR200 has lost the splash-proof credentials of its predecessor.
