Alpha 500, 550 and 850 target second generation Sony D-SLR buyers
Sony has added three new D-SLRs to its Alpha range.
Leading the way is the a850, a full-frame SLR that matches the high-end a900 in almost every way, but trims a couple of features to bring the price down slightly.
Further down the range, the a500 and a550 land to offer a natural step-up point for existing entry-level Sony D-SLR owners.
Full-frame
The a850 has the same 24.6MP full frame sensor as seen on its big brother the a900, and also has a 3in LCD and ISO range of up to 6400.
The continuous shooting speed is only 3fps (unlike the a900's 5fps) and viewfinder coverage is 98% (versus 100%), but Sony has promised an "affordable" price, though it has yet to confirm just how affordable. The a900 retails for £1800.
The a500 and a550 feature tiltable 3in LCDs, 12.1MP and 14.2MP resolution respectively and ISO up to 12800. Like the a850, prices have yet to be firmed up, though both should come in well under £1000.
None of the new models are capable of shooting video, however, and Sony is sticking with its own MemoryStick card as a recording format.
The a850 will be available in September, while the a500 and a550 will hit the streets a month later.
