Nokia gets all touchy feely with 5800 XpressMusic

Extra choice for the touch generation

Touch sensitive phones – they're like buses. Just the other week there was the Google/HTC/T-Mobile G1 and now hot on its heels is perhaps the worst kept secret in the mobile industry since the original iPhone – the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic.

Down the Tubes

Of course, as eagle-eyed readers will have spotted, until now this handset went under the code name Tube. And we're thanking all the mobile gods we can think of that Nokia chose something much better for its final release.

Specs machine

So, now it's all official and everything – what can you expect from this later wonder-phone? Well, in all honesty quite a lot. It comes with a 3.2in 640x360 resolution touch-sensitive screen – putting it up there with (and in some ways better than) the iPhone and G1.

The Symbian OS has also been touched up so it responds appropriately to finger prods or alternatively there's a stylus tucked in the bottom if you're after a bit more accuracy.

It supports all the standard wireless ways of talking you'd expect – like 3G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth – and there's also GPS built in so it knows where it is, plus an accelerometer so it can sense which way round you're holding it. Internal storage is pretty low, but there is an 8GB microSD card in the box to make up for it. The camera only stretches to 3.2 megapixels, but that's still more than the iPhone.

All you can eat

Perhaps the best bit, however, is that it will be available on Nokia's upcoming Comes With Music programme – which lets you tap into as many free music downloads as you want for a whole year. If you're shopping for a new phone, it's definitely one to add to your 'must investigate further' list.

Availability

There's no point getting too excited just yet – we've had the official announcement but it's likely to be a couple of months before you can actually get your mitts on one. Like all phones, pricing will depend on contract but we can't see it costing that much once the networks have started fighting for your custom.
