Mobile industry introduces energy star ratings for chargers

Cut your leccy bill and save the environment too!

The big five mobile phone makers have all got together and agreed to introduce efficiency ratings for phone chargers. Soon you'll be able to see how much electricity the charger sucks up in advance, so you can make sure you pick the right one.

Power struggle

The star rating system has been developed by LG, Motorola, Nokia, Samsung and Sony Ericsson to make it easier for consumers to see how much juice each charger uses. In addition, the five manufacturers have also committed to making their chargers more efficient in the future.

The big problem with phone chargers is not the amount of energy they use to top up your phone, but the fact they keep on sucking up power once you've unplugged your handset. The rating system shows how much power each gobbles up when the phone has been disconnected and it's sat there doing nothing.

Obviously it would be better to unplug the charger once its done its job – but at least this way if you forget, you can make sure you're wasting as little energy as possible.

How much energy?

You can find out more info and how much power each charger uses from the manufacturers below:

No load (vampire energy) problem solved for cell chargers

Although commendable, why integrate a solution that only reduces energy loss (otherwise known as vampire energy loss) when you can implement a solution that eliminates energy loss entirely?

A company called Vampire Labs has developed technology that has eliminated this problem in cell phone chargers. In other words, you are not sucking power if you forget to unplug your device or your device is fully charged.
