Make of that, what you will...
Apple has saved Christmas by announcing there'll be no Steve-note at Macworld in January. Now everyone can focus on Trivial Pursuit, excessive drinking and passive aggressive mind games with the family instead.
No Stevo, no show
The chances of any major, life changing announcements coming from the mouth of anyone other than Steve Jobs are slim to none, which makes the task at hand even more daunting for fill in Philip Schiller, senior vice president of not being Steve at Apple.
As if to further piss on the Macworld bonfire, Apple has also announced that 2009 will be the last year it'll be making an appearance at the show. Talk about kicking a conference when it's down.
Without saying so much, the message from Apple is: trade shows are boring and we don't need them anyway, so there.
Macworld, which is run by IDG not Apple, apparently is now only a minor, sorry – very minor – part of how it reaches its customers. It's much more likely to sweet talk one of the 3.5 million people who weekly pop into one of its showcase stores or try and lure people into Apple-land via its website.
And that's all there is to it, really. Apple's announcement about the matter was so short and uneventful it even had to tag on a paragraph at the end about how it also makes MP3 players, presumably just to pad it out a bit.
Availability
The Apple show, minus Steve, will take to the stage one last time on 6 January 2009 at 9am San Francisco time. It's probably worth keeping half an eye on, just in case, but if you're holding back from buying any Apple kit between now and then you're probably safe treating yourself to an early Christmas present.
