To prove what a wonderfully diverse AV world we live in, we’ve amusingly decided to review the most expensive projector we’ve ever seen right after one of the cheapest. God, we’re wacky.
The mortgage-inducing bad boy is Sim2’s Grand Cinema C3X 1080 – a snippette at £23,000. And no, we haven’t accidentally added an extra zero.
At this point you’re probably wondering just how any projector can justify costing so much. So we’ll tell you.
Three chips are better than one
First, the gorgeously designed C3X 1080 has the most extreme and sophisticated set up procedures we’ve ever seen. Second, it’s got three full HD DLP chips rather than the usual one. And finally, it produces pictures so good they’ve been known to make grown men weep.
Regarding the set up stuff, the key point is that the C3X 1080’s colour menus have been designed to work in tandem with some almost infinitely flexible PC software and a high-spec colour metre. This gives an installer unique flexibility to fine tune colours to more or less perfection (based on the industry-approved D65 video standard), regardless of the characteristics of your room/screen.
The C3X 1080’s use of three DLP chips, meanwhile, allows the projector to use one chip each for the green, red, and blue elements of the picture. There’s thus no need for DLP’s usual colour wheel, meaning the projector won’t suffer with DLP’s traditional ‘rainbow’ colour striping or motion fuzzing artefacts.
As for the C3X 1080’s unprecedented picture quality, that’s really pretty easy to describe. Colours, for instance, are dynamic, emphatically authentic, and rendered with astonishing subtlety. HD images look so sharp, detailed and clean that you might as well be watching a pristine strip of celluloid.
Black magic
The projector’s combination of brightness and contrast is so perfectly judged, meanwhile, that the projector can produce deep black levels without leaving bright scenes looking even slightly dull.
Even better, the effortlessness of the C3X 1080’s black levels enables it to show depth-giving shadow details in more abundance than I’ve ever seen them before.
Add fluid, pin-sharp motion; staggering solidity and stability; and a complete absence of any video noise other than that which might exist in a source, et voila: you’ve got the best projector pictures ever.
Clearly hardly anyone will ever be able to actually buy a C3X 1080. But it’s always good to have a reason to keep playing the lottery, right?
