Turn on the Sony Nav NV-U93T and immediately it impresses thanks to its large, colourful, 4.8in diameter, 480 x 272 resolution screen.
The large size doesn’t mean you get any more information but it does at least make for the clearest maps on test with everything bold and clear. Text and icons are particularly impressive, thanks to some nifty edge-smoothing graphics tricks.
Sony dubs its range ‘Personal Navigation Units,’ which, considering the size, 250g weight and restrictive two-hour battery life is perhaps stretching it a little. At least, with a depth of 20mm it’s reasonably svelte. Build quality is good too and it feels as if it could survive a tumble or two.
Due to its weight, the car mount needs to be good - and it is - with a suction cup that sticks limpet like to the windscreen, yet also comes away without leaving any marks. It’s quite possibly done by magic.
The Sony offers full maps for 21 countries on its internal 2GB flash memory using the well regarded Navteq data, so it can live with you on the cross-country road trip.
In use, the Sony excels thanks to its well laid out on screen, with neat tricks such as displaying the direction of the next junction with a bar that fills up as you approach. The female guidance voice is also delectably posh.
Unfortunately though, despite the dulcet tones, she takes too long to register instructions as you enter info. She also has a habit of giving you instructions after you’ve passed the junction, rather than before.
A speed camera database is included with the Sony, but you have to go online to get it and accessing it via the web site involves downloading, registering, activating and a working knowledge of tech Voodoo – not helpful.
Traffic data is provided via an external TMC dongle, although as the free version is pretty pants you’ll need to fork out for more to get to the useful paid-for version.
Finally, while the sound quality of the speaker is good, the microphone isn’t, so when using it as a Bluetooth hands free you’ll struggle to be heard.
As a straight up GPS unit though, the Sony is untouched for style, and just a few negatives preventing it from being the perfect date.
