TomTom kicked started the dedicated in-car portable sat nav market back in 2004 and it’s been hoovering up market share ever since. Even now its sat navs are the ones to beat.
TomTom has just released a new flagship model, the 930T and, as such the 920T, which features maps for Europe and the US is likely to drop in price so you could be picking up a bargain very soon.
Appearance wise the 920T is smart and it attaches and detaches easily from its mount, but its slightly bulbous shape makes it a touch less portable than the likes of the Garmin nuvi 770. The supplied remote is nice to use and lets a passenger take control.
Quick fix
Performance wise, it was very quick to find a location fix and even managed to find satellites indoors – at least when near a window. It was always responsive too, making it a pleasure to operate.
Feature wise, its party trick is speech recognition, enabling you to enter addresses without having to spend too long touching the display and therefore possibly being distracted from the road. Impressively, this actually works as advertised.

Also useful is the MapShare function, which enables you to correct any incorrect points on routes and then upload them to an online database just by popping the details into the supplied cradle connected to your PC. You can also download others corrections and choose which ones to accept – a neat system.
Other highlights are the screen that auto dims and lightens depending on ambient conditions. It also boasts the loudest and clearest voice out of our road test line-up, complete with text-to-speech functionality for reading out road names. Directions are always given in good time too.
Two-way traffic
An FM transmitter lets you listen to your music stored on SD card (though good luck finding a clear frequency) and FM is also used for the integrated TMC receiver.
However, we’d ignore this and opt for TomTom’s paid-for traffic subscription service that downloads via a Bluetooth-connected mobile. It delivers far richer traffic information and integrates well with the route planning. A safety camera database is also preinstalled.
As always, TomTom has a wealth of personalisation options ranging from modifying the start-up image, choosing left or right-handed use, to downloadable voices (John Cleese is our favourite). But, despite this, the menu is so simple that one never feels overwhelmed.
The 920T is more expensive than all the others we tested, but it’s the best to use and if you don’t need US or European maps go for cheaper variants to get even better value.
