v-JAYS

Lightweight construction and modest looks disguise some surprisingly beefy performance

With their simple, refined elegance, understated and functional, it has to be said that the v-JAYS, from Swedish headphone maker Jays, look Scandinavian.

Sad stereotypes aside, it's a design that broadly works for us, though some might find the v-JAYS' minimalist simplicity dull. But if you are going to go the open headphone route, there are certainly worse-looking options out there.

The square foam cushions that cover the 40mm drivers are comfortable against the ear, and the flex in the headband holds them in place without too much pressure. The usual variable extensions will work for most heads, while the 60mm cable and 70mm extension are both ideal lengths.

The whole unit weighs just 59g, but still manages to feel robust and well-made.

And there's certainly nothing lightweight about its performance. The v-JAYS are labelled as 'heavy bass speaker headphones' on the packaging, and we certainly can't argue with that – or the sheer power they pack.

The sound spectrum is fuller than you expect from headphones this size, and there's none of that steroid-riddled bass boosting so many in-ear phones use to try and achieve natural balance. The overall effect is very pleasant.

A song for everyone

Unfortunately, the v-JAYS' greatest strength – their power vs size ratio – is also unwittingly their greatest drawback. The small earpieces and open speaker design are never likely to endear you to those around you, and with this much punch on hand, a fair amount of that sound is going to escape.

But we can't just them too harshly for that; it's more a reality of this type of headphone than a specific flaw of these.

For the money, we have no complaints. You have little right to expect this much power from headphones this small and light, and without any compromises in subtlety and balance. If you're determined to avoid in-ear headphones, the v-JAYS are worth placing near the top of the list.
