Our hearts sank when we first saw the E-P1. With its design slavishly following the original PEN’s from 1959, it was clear that this was a flashy-looking camera for those motivated more by cool than by taking good pictures. Even the strap is cool.
But we needn’t have worried, because we fell in love with the E-P1 just after we started using it. First and foremost, it takes good pictures. Not as good, perhaps, as the perfect images you’ll get from a proper D-SLR such as the Nikon D5000 or Canon 500D, but excellent nonetheless.
There's plenty of detail in the EP-1's 12.3-megapixel shots, and JPEG artefacts are kept down. Colours aren't quite as warm as you'll find from a D-SLR, though, and despite the excellent quality, most D-SLRs – particularly at this price – offer superior noise handling. This is particularly true once you push the ISO above 800.
There’s a decent video mode as well, with the E-P1 capable of recording up to 720p at 30fps. Video quality reflected the PEN’s stills quality, which is to say it was excellent, if not not quite as good as that from HD-capable D-SLRs like the D5000 or 500D. As with the D5000, we noted that the E-P1 is occasionally hampered by its rolling shutter, which can make vertical objects appear skewed as they move from one side of the frame to the other.
The looks of the E-P1 might polarise people, but we like them. We like how the camera handles even more, though. Despite the lack of ergonomic finger-holds – although the faux-leather grip helps – it sits well in the hand and is well-balanced. It’s also made largely from metal, which makes it feel resilient: impressive for a camera that weighs 562g including the lens and battery.
Bright and sharp
The screen on the back is excellent. It measures 3in from corner to corner, and we found it bright and sharp, which are two useful attributes on a camera that has full-time manual focusing. The menu system is also good – intuitive, easy-to-navigate and well-stocked with features.
True to its D-SLR aspirations, the E-P1 can be set to full-time manual, as well as offering aperture and shutter priority modes. There’s a fully-auto mode as well, plus a number of scene and creative modes. Usefully, the creative modes can be applied to video – useful for those uninterested in editing their films on a PC.
A final note of convenience is Olympus’ abandonment of the humble xD card on the E-P1, in favour of the universal and cheaper SD card. SDHC cards can also be used, although those with Spielberg-like ambitions might note the 2GB cap on video recording.
There has to be a drawback, though, and in this case it’s the price. In this configuration, the E-P1 costs £699. If you want to use different lenses you’ll pay more again.
We’re also unhappy about the omission of a built-in flash, which we consider an absolute must on a high-end consumer camera. The E-P1 is compatible with Olympus’s Four-Thirds format lenses, but only with the help of an adapter which is – you guessed it – optional. It’s incredibly expensive, and its image quality fares relatively poorly to APS-C sensor cameras such as Nikon’s mid-range budget cameras.
But we don’t care. D-SLRs are big, heavy, and the odds of you finding one with a tough-feeling metal body for under a grand are precisely zero.
The E-P1 isn’t the perfect bundle – although it may get closer as its price drops. But as it is, if you’re after D-SLR-like quality from a camera that will fit in the chicest bag, the E-P1 is more than worthy of consideration.

If the Olympians are listening, could we have one like this, but with an f:2.0 pancake lens, Optical viewfinder (with adjustable parallax compensation), and an obligatory integral flash.
Then you'll have compact perfection. Better than a Canon G-10, fewer bells & whistles than the G-10, as good a lens as Leica's D-Lux 4 (or LX3 from Panasonic - same thing, really), which feels right and is (relatively), intuitive to use.
This will bring us back to the days when almost everyone kept a small camera in their bag or pocket - like the original Pen or Pen-E, and we weren't afraid to use them! Isn't that what photography is all about?
So, Olympus. A new Pen please, plus an integral optical window on what I'm about to capture, a light to brighten the dark and a faster, flatter lens for instancy.
Then you'll have achieved pocket pen- sized perfection!
