Aesthetically, LG's KC780 looks quite different to the touchscreen Renoir. And in our opinion, the black finish (also comes in grey) and sliding keyboard make for an improvement.
At just 119g it compares favourably to the Renoir but manages to pack in an equally bursting set of features.
The controls do take a bit of getting used to. The numerical slide-out keypad is pretty self-explanatory, with smooth keys that are not unpleasant to the touch, but we found the slide action didn’t always work smoothly.
Home sweet home
On the 2.4in display’s home screen – bang centre – you’ll see an envelope, heart (for favourites), music player and speaker options laid out as per the points of a compass. These relate to the shortcuts driven by the corresponding press of the navigational pad.
The C button is also dual-purpose, working as a shortcut menu for a clock, calendar and pictures – which you can then browse using the navigational pad or by theme (in a thumbnail-style view) using the right-hand rectangle.
With an 8MP camera and Schneider Kreuznach optics, coupled with DivX support and video recording at 30fps, the KC780 is on a par with the Renoir, serving up stills and video that are pleasing to the senses.
Features like auto-focus, image stabilisation and the like are on board, as is adjustable light sensitivity up to ISO 600 and SmartLight technology. What’s more, it has face detection, smile shot and beauty modes with the aim of taking better pics of the peeps that matter to you.
M-Toy games a la Renoir are also present and correct – and make similarly good use of the accelerometer – so we won’t regurgitate our thoughts about them again here.
Easy does it
The UI is vibrant and easy to use, although it has to be said the browser is nothing to write home to mother about. We were surprised to find Bluetooth webcam functionality listed – hidden away – on the multimedia menu. But it was a nice surprise nonetheless, opening up the door for other smart Bluetooth uses.
The KC780 is quite a looker, passing that all-important pub table test. And it’s ideal for style-conscious individuals who’re into (but not addicted to) social networking, but also want an all-rounder with excellent call and texting ability and high quality snaps.
